Cake Smash Sessions: The 1st Birthday Extravaganza!

Let’s talk about cake smash sessions!
Before we begin, hands up who knows where the concept of a cake smash came from?
The cake smash trend originated in the US, where parents sought adorable images of their babies for birthday invitations or thank-you cards. As a result, cake smashes often occurred about a month before the child's first birthday, serving as a perfect opportunity to capture their first encounter with cake. At that age, most children would rather play with it, sticking their face, foot, or grabbing handfuls, rather than delicately eating it from a plate which makes the cutest and most endearing images showcasing the child’s unique personality!
In recent years, the UK has also fully embraced this trend. Parents seem to cherish any chance to capture beautiful images of their little ones while they are still so young. Their first birthday marks a significant milestone while also celebrating the parents' achievement of making it through the rollercoaster of emotions and sleep deprivation during the first year!
A cake smash is now a client-favourite to celebrate a child's first birthday as they begin to explore new experiences, especially when it comes to tasting and playing with different textures. True to its name, the session is filled with fun, mess, and sometimes a little bit of chaos - and I’ve absolutely been loving capturing these precious moments!
Typically, cake smashes take place in studios, however, as I pride myself in being a photographer who likes to do things a bit differently, I’ve come up with my unique version of a cake smash session using the two elements that forge my signature photography style – the great outdoors and using natural light!
